PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor from a reader regarding Bill 23:
After reading an article in another newspaper about how MPP Sam Oosterhoff sat down with municipal leaders in Pelham to discuss Bill 23 while actually dodging a Bill 23 protest rally at its advertised site I had to shake my head. Mayor Junkin said the meeting was a good opportunity to discuss how the bill will affect Pelham, but that he does not expect any major changes to the area as a result of it.
Well, Mr. Mayor, I hope you had a good look outside on December 23 at that once-in-a-lifetime storm, and repeated the words “global warming is not a hoax,” and Bill 23 does matter.
Apparently, Mr. Oosterhoff never mentioned how Bill 23 strips the Conservation Authorities of their ability to protect wetlands, which will in turn trash the hard-fought Option 3C to protect our environment in Niagara.
He couldn't have mentioned Mr. Ford’s plan to prevent flooding after these wetlands are destroyed, or how Mr. Ford plans to move the development fees from the developer over to the taxpayer. You're right, Mr. Mayor, Bill 23 doesn't affect much as long as you keep your head in the sand.
