PelhamToday received the following letter from a reader who says it is not safe to access Marlene Stewart Streit Park.

Tucked below street level, off Pelham Street, surrounded by trees and Highway 20, is Marlene Stewart Streit Park. This should be a busy children's play area. But it is not busy.

Why not?

Why is there no safe sidewalk to access this recreational area sandwiched between two big buildings? Why was it designed so that it is nearly impossible to turn left upon exiting said park area? It is not easy to turn right either, with the number of fast-moving cars heading up the hill at full throttle. (Speeding on Highway 20 is now common) As for the four corners of heavy traffic, there is little accommodation to access the park, never mind good signage.

The roadway leading from Pelham into the park area is not safe for strollers, cyclists or pedestrians. With the increase in families moving into East Fonthill, Pelham staff and our elected representatives need to address this issue.

Safety should be a priority, not an afterthought.
