LETTER: Tariff threat requires unity, not a provincial election

'(Ford) already has a huge majority in the legislature until 2026, the other party leaders have all said they would support him in the tariff fight…what more does he need,' a reader asks

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor regarding Trump's threat to impose tariffs on Canada.

I am very proud to be a Canadian. Having travelled and lived in other countries I know how privileged I am to live here. That said, I also know that we are living in difficult and sometimes dangerous times around the world.

Donald Trump’s election and his threat to impose huge tariffs on our country needs all of us to be united. That is why I was impressed that our Premier Doug Ford seemed to rise to the occasion to rebut on American television many of the myths about our trade relationship and work with our other provinces and our federal government to speak with one voice. This was also extremely important given we are facing so much uncertainty with the resignation of our Prime Minister and an impending federal election.

The last thing we need right now is a provincial election!! Premier Ford has intimated that he needs a strong mandate ‘from the people’ to move forward in negotiations with the United States. He already has a huge majority in the legislature until 2026, the other party leaders have all said they would support him in the tariff fight…what more does he need? As far as I am concerned this is a complete and utter waste of time and money that would be far better spent on the ‘needs’ of our people such as healthcare and housing and building a better economy.

For this reason, if an election is called, Doug Ford will not get my vote.
