Lowes case deferred for 25th time

Next scheduled hearing set for Feb. 24
Country Corner Market, Fonthill.

Another hearing ends in another adjournment. The sexual assault case involving local business owner Richard Lowes has been deferred for a 25th time.

In March 2021, Lowes was charged with three counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference with a person under the age of 16.

Mark Evans, lawyer for the accused, appeared in Welland virtual court on Friday morning, Jan. 27,  to ask the judge for another adjournment so he can confer with Crown Attorney Stephanie Ford.

While details on the allegations are scant due to a publication ban, Jan. 27 marked the 25th time the matter was before the court.

Lowes owns and operates the Country Corner Market, at Quaker Road and Line Avenue in Fonthill, and has supported numerous charitable causes in Pelham and Niagara with food donations in the past. He was also named the 2008 Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club’s Citizen of the Year.

The next hearing is set to take place on Feb. 24.
