Victim sustains serious injuries in Niagara Falls stabbing

On March 18, 2023 at 9:24 p.m., Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 2 District (Niagara Falls / Niagara-on-the-Lake) responded to a disturbance located on Stanton Avenue near Ferguson Street in the City of Niagara Falls.

Upon arrival, officers located a 26-year-old Niagara Falls resident suffering from on obvious stab wound. Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics responded to the scene and ultimately transported the male victim to an out-of-town trauma centre for advanced medical care. The victim remains in hospital suffering from serious non life-threatening injuries.

Investigation has determined a disturbance occurred among a group of acquaintances outside of a residential home on Stanton Avenue. As a result of the disturbance, a knife was drawn and the victim was stabbed. The suspect proceeded to flee from the scene on foot, resulting in the NRPS Canine Unit being requested to attend. At 9:33 p.m., a uniform patrol officer located the suspect on Elgin Street and placed him under arrest. The involved knife was recovered.

Jesse Shute (26 years) of Wainfleet has been arrested and is charged with the following Criminal Code Offences:
    •    Aggravated assault
    •    Assault with a weapon
    •    Possession of a weapon

Shute was held in custody and attended a bail hearing that took place on March 19, 2023, via video link to the John Sopinka Courthouse, located at 45 Main St. E. in the City of Hamilton. He was released from custody on a Form 11 Release Order. Shute’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 19, 2023, at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church St. in the City of St. Catharines.

Detectives assigned to the 2 District Criminal Investigative Branch have assumed carriage of the investigation. They are being assisted by members from the Forensic Services Unit. Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead detective by dialling 905-688-4111, option 3, 1009219.
