The essentials you need to establish beautiful gardens and landscaping for your residential property may come from Mother Earth. But sometimes, you just can’t beat a good father and son team when it comes to utilizing those essentials in the best possible fashion.

That’s been the secret to success for Green Acres Total Lawn Care Ltd, a well-established lawn, garden, and landscaping company providing top quality service from Welland to Fort Erie to St. Catharines and all points in between.

Owned and operated by the father/son team of Steve and Mackenzie Piironen, Green Acres Total Lawn Care continues to expand its client base by not only offering exceptional landscaping and related outdoor home improvement services but also relevant information to help homeowners create a healthy natural environment in their yards.

That information includes helping clients determine the right place to plant the elements they want to include in their gardens.

“Plant placement is a big issue with customers we see,” said Steve Piironen, who shares the workload with both his son and his wife, a horticulturist with 40 years experience. “Customers go into a garden centre and say, ‘I really like this plant.’ They’ll purchase it and bring it home. Then they don’t plant in the right location in relation to south side, north side, or even prevailing winds. Then it dies and they blame the garden centre.”

Piironen said that education becomes a big part of their service in such cases, helping homeowners avoid planting errors that require them to purchase new plants every spring. While they do provide the standard weekly lawn mowing and landscaping service, Green Acres Total Lawn Care Ltd. also offers alternative methods of growing healthy lawns.

“We had an interesting comment from a client yesterday who we did some top dressing for on his lawn,” said Piironen. “We provided a top dressing that included peat moss to hold the moisture along with overseeding and fertilizer. It’s a better alternative for a distressed lawn than cutting out all the sod and resodding. It’s not something widely used here, but it’s a great way to bring your lawn back. He said the results were amazing. With our experience we can educate customers on different things related to lawn care.”

While spring’s arrival has resulted in the inevitable early season rush to book their services, Piironen said there may be other options depending on what they want done.

“Landscaping projects don’t always have to happen in the spring,” he said. “Landscaping a lot of times is better to do in mid summer, June and July. Obviously that doesn’t apply to sodding which is best done in the fall. People with a wish list of things like fencing and patios and landscaping can easily be served in the summer.”

According to Piironen, Green Acres Total Lawn Care Ltd. is a local business that recognizes the importance of supporting its local community.

“We support other local businesses. We support local suppliers whether that’s for buying mulch, topsoil, pavers, even down to the auto parts we need for our vehicles and equipment. We deal with all local people because we feel that’s important. It’s a win/win for everyone.”
