Is it possible that there may be a relationship between the noise level a vehicle engine produces and the masculinity of the vehicle owner?

It is a well known fact that vehicle manufacturers spend a great deal of money to purposely quieten the engine noise of their products. Subsequently, some vehicle buyers disregard that mutation feature and install an appliance that warns pedestrians in the next county of their pending arrival. Beyond proudly proclaiming a healthy testosterone level, might there be any reason for producing engine noises exceeding the decibel level of a fully loaded 747 aircraft at takeoff?

In spite of the annoyance level created by these bikers and customized auto drivers, there should be grave concerns about the unwitting ear damage these noise makers are causing themselves. Eventually, such a hearing loss might mean that they will seek another even louder machine to ward off the possible appearance of a decline in their testosterone levels.

Many of the motorcycles climbing the hill in Fonthill make enough noise to be heard at the base of Niagara Falls and maybe even beyond. It is also true that many of the birds and other animals have fled the area as they know better than to stick around. Their hearing is very important to their survival and so they prefer to locate in more tranquil settings absent of ear damaging engine noise produced by vehicle motors, rocket launchings, gun shots and rock crushing machines.

It is evident that these noise-loving vehicle owners prefer rock concerts where the amplitude of the amplifiers is turned up high enough to be heard by orbiting satellites and commercial aircraft flying at 32,000 feet. The vehicle owners generating the loudest engine noise at these gatherings win a set of hearing aids and a coupon offering free hearing tests at a nearby audiology clinic.

Many communities have enacted bylaws to control and discourage excessive noise. However, something somehow seems to deter bylaw officers from enforcing those particular anti-noise regulations. For one thing, the drivers of these ear shattering machines can’t hear the bylaw officers’ orders to pull over and continue their journey happily producing their ear- splitting cacophony.

I certainly admire those motorcyclists and muscle car drivers who have avoided joining the noisiest vehicle club and pass us by with hardly a whisper of their passage. These gentlemen have no illusions that the noise level of their vehicle has anything to do with their masculinity.

Meanwhile, the next time you begin to faintly hear their deafening roar coming from far off beyond the horizon get ready to protect yourself and cover your ears. Till next time, safe hearing everyone.
