There is virtually nothing that can compare to a mother’s love for her children. That’s not to demean or lessen the qualities of a father’s love or the love between partners of all sorts. There is no doubt that a mother’s love exceeds all others in depth, intensity and longevity.
The bond between mother and child has an intensification that exceeds all other love relationships. Whenever one sees a mother and child together one can clearly observe the bonding that is there. And it matters not the age of the mother and child as there is a permanence to that bond that is not very easily broken, even if unrequited.
There is little wonder that Ave Maria is one of the most popular musical pieces devoted to honouring motherhood regardless of religious affiliation. Even professional sports honour motherhood when they invoke the ‘Hail Mary’ play as a last ditch effort. Mother help us is a refrain often heard when someone encounters near hopeless circumstances.
If ever any type of harm threatens a mother’s offspring she will always willingly come to the fore and attend to those perils regardless of any danger to herself or well-being. In such situations there is no other who can mollify or lessen any potential harm quite like the child’s mother. This can be observed when one sees a mother apply a band-aid to her child’s bruise and the pain is almost immediately alleviated. There is no doubt that a mother’s love is her offsprings’ best medicine.
I mention this personal incident to help demonstrate the depth of a mother’s love. My mother had ten children and her love for each one was unequivocal. Unfortunately, one of my brothers died at an early age and our mother was so devastated that she was bedridden for three days in the grips of disabling grief.
And so it is that Mother’s Day will soon be upon us. A day set aside to exclusively honour our mothers. If your mother has passed, you might openly recall some of your memories of her endless expressions of love. Thank her for giving you life and all that she has done for you. In fact, you are of her making.
If your mother still shares this life then you have the opportunity on this special day to do something extra special for your mom. It need not be an expensive material good but rather something from the heart. Such an expression of love will surely bring joy to her very core. Such an ardent expression of your love will mean more to her than anything anyone might gift her.
