Beverley North says being a volunteer “just expands your world.”

Volunteering is not something new for Beverley North. After all, she had excellent example in her mother, Jewel North, who volunteered as a convener for the Fenwick Softball Association.

“She was the convener over 10 years organizing times for the teams and umpires, said North.

“There was a huge amount of kids that were involved in baseball, myself included, North said.”She was very active. I've tried to keep that as an adult.”

North, a mother of two, was an active volunteer over the years – canvassing with the Kidney Foundation or serving the “hot lunch lady – but was looking for a service club to join during the pandemic.

“I was seeking that feeling of camaraderie,” said North.

Having conversations and getting to meeting new people was a highlight for her.

“It just expands your world,” said North.

Currently, she is helping to create content for the group's social media with the goal of driving recruitment. North said she enjoyed the way the Rotary members help out at other events hosted by different service clubs or organizations.

One great memory North shared was when she assisted the Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Holiday House tour. One of her responsibilities that evening was pointing out a step tour guests would need to take.

“I was helping people step up in the world,” she joked.

Another positive was the club's flexibility. Depending on the month, the time commitment to be a Rotary member is about four hours a month.

“People are able to volunteer when it fits their schedule,” she said. “And, you get to make the world a better place.”
