PelhamToday received the following reader letter to the editor concerning legalized gambling:
Canadian governments, both federal and provincial, want to fill the coffers with the billions of dollars in tax revenues generated by gambling. Cigarette ads did the same. Addiction to cigarettes demonstrated the need for change thus laws banning related ads were created.
What lesson was learned? Addiction to gambling is already present. Our Healthcare system is underfunded and understaffed. Our children are at risk of addiction because of the routine acceptance of gambling ads. Inundated with popular athletes promoting gambling is not acceptable.
Concerned citizens need to address the issue now. Our government should lead by example and ban these ads before more damage is inflicted on families and society.
