LETTER: Indigenous reconciliation motion sought at Pelham council

PelhamToday received the following letter from Steven Soos regarding a motion he hopes to see made at Pelham Town Council on July 5.

I am seeking a mover and a seconder for the following Indigenous-Reconciliation motion that I have authored and will be presenting on in person at the July 5th meeting of Pelham Town Council.

The motion would read:

That Pelham Town Council condemn the racist and paternalistic Indian Act.

That Town of Pelham request the Canadian government to scrap the "Indian Act," and replace the Act with new legislation re-named the National Indigenous People’s Act and that the National Indigenous People’s Act be legislation fully committing the Canadian government to true Indigenous Reconciliation.

That Pelham Town Council request all Niagara-area municipalities to support and commit to Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin's initiative for Towns/Cities to feature Indigenous languages in the names of future street signs.

That Pelham Town Council request all Niagara-area municipalities to commit to highlight and showcasing more Indigenous wellness literature in their local public libraries and that all Niagara's Cities/Town's implement this recommendation in their public libraries.

That Pelham Town Council approach the Lincoln Pelham Public Library Board to request the Board consider highlighting and showcasing more Indigenous wellness literature in all libraries under their umbrella and request the Lincoln/Pelham library Board to consider consulting Niagara’s local Indigenous community on what types of Indigenous wellness literature they would like to see featured in our Lincoln/Pelham Libraries.

That the Town of Pelham request local winery partners (with the assistance of the Niagara Grape Growers of Ontario) and the Ontario Minister of Finance, responsible for LCBO to add mandatory warning labels on alcohol products sold in the province like legal weed and tobacco.

That Pelham Town Council endorse Mr. Steven Roman Soos' initiative of an Indigenous mental health mobile crisis unit pilot project in Niagara Region.

That Town of Pelham request Ontario First Nation Technical Services Corporation to forward Town of Pelham's motion to all Unaffiliated First Nations, Tribal Councils and Large First Nations under their umbrella in Ontario.

That Town of Pelham request Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres to forward Town of Pelham's motion to ALL Indigenous Friendship Centres under their umbrella in Ontario.

That Town of Pelham forward the resolution to all Niagara-area municipalities, Provincial Minister of Indigenous Affairs, Federal Minister of Indigenous-Crown Relations, the Canadian Indigenous Services Minister, Chief Mark Hill-Six Nations of the Grand River, Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation, and Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, Canadian Senator for Quebec, Patrick Brazeau, Canadian Senator for Ontario, Kim Pate, Canadian Senator for Quebec, Leo Hausakos, MP for Winnipeg Centre, Leah Gazan, and Lincoln/Pelham Public Library Board and Assembly of First Nations, and Sarah McGean, Brock University Indigenous Educational Studies.
