LETTER: Teens, not dogs, are the problem in cemeteries

'I have not witnessed anyone permitting their dog to relieve themselves on a grave'

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor about the potential of banning dogs in local cemeteries.

Every morning, I take my dog for a stroll in Fonthill Cemetery. Five waste bins are consistently filled with bags of dog waste, providing clear evidence that citizens are responsibly cleaning up after their dogs.

Surprisingly, I have not witnessed anyone permitting their dog to relieve themselves on a grave. In truth, I have never observed anyone walking their dog without a leash.

On the contrary, I have encountered instances of vandals toppling grave markers. A particular small marker that was kicked over approximately 18 months ago still remains on the ground.

Perhaps the town should prioritize addressing teenage vandals instead of responsible dog owners.

A few weeks back, a woman who often takes her dogs for walks in Fonthill Cemetery informed me that she had witnessed a group of teenagers chasing the foxes that are known to frequent the area. A large coyote is often seen in the vicinity, and it is highly probable that the wildlife is responsible for the feces found on the graves.
