The lively crew of volunteers at Bikes for Farmworkers would like to thank the community for making their March bike drive such a successful event. A total of 71 bikes were dropped off , which will keep the crew busy as they gear up for a new season.
Every donated bike is put through a rigorous 50 point check list before being offered for sale for $25 to the men and women who work on local farms and greenhouses.
Lack of transportation and the resulting isolation is a challenge for those who work in Niagara for six to eight months of the year. Having a dependable bicycle makes a significant difference between surviving and thriving.
Clothing hubs, drop-in centres and bike shops have caught on in many rural areas across Ontario. These hubs not only offer essential services to men and women but are also providing opportunities for locals to engage and develop friendships with those who are far away from family.
Those interested in volunteering or donating can visit the bike shop at 1665 Four Mile Creek Road in Virgil (the former Virgil School), and enter through the red doors.Open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday evenings for purchases.
