The Niagara Food Security Network (NFSN) is inviting anyone involved in Niagara’s food system and food security to attend the ‘Moving Toward Action Forum’. The forum will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 from 9:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls.
The forum is aimed at bringing Niagara’s food system players, community members, grassroots organizations, community partners, groups and agencies, farmers and growers, the business sector, and health and government representatives together to collectively work to improve food security. Forum attendees will dialogue about potential Niagara-based food security pilot projects and determine what projects will be invested in to determine feasibility and scalability. All voices are needed and all food system players are encouraged to attend.

The goal is that within ten years, 80 per cent of food insecure households in Niagara will have access to affordable, healthy, culturally appropriate food, at the right time and in the right place. To achieve this the NFSN will focus efforts on the Theory of Change and four foundational strategies and key activities to achieve a set of outcomes aimed at reaching our intended impact. These four strategies include: accessing; growing, harvesting and securing; logistics, distribution and storage; and preparing and eating.
“We recognize the complex food system in Niagara and that there are many system players, all playing a unique role to ensure people are able to access healthy and appropriate food. The NFSN believes that everyone has an important role to play in building a stronger food system in Niagara. The forum is aimed at bringing together all of Niagara’s food system players to co-create solutions that will ultimately improve food security. The Network promotes and fosters collaboration and we will use this forum to move toward actionable projects and activities across Niagara," shared Carolyn Askeland, executive director of Community Support Services of Niagara, and a member of the Network Planning Team.
The Network is composed of community members, community groups, networks, non-profit agencies, charitable organizations, faith groups, individuals with lived/living experience, government, public health, business and agricultural sectors, and others working to address food insecurity in Niagara. We are collaborating to strengthen and improve the food security system, especially for vulnerable, marginalized and at-risk individuals in the Niagara region.
