March 16 2022: Retiring crossing guard given snowy send-off. Crossing guard Violet Steingart with her husband, Ken, outside the A. K. Wigg Public School last Friday, March 11. The entire A. K. Wigg student body and staff turned out to send off Steingart as she retired from two decades-plus on the job.

March 14 2018: Judy Reid accepts Citizen of the Year award before packed house. Reid with her award and congratulations from local, provincial, and federal offices. FILE
May 3 2006: Earth Day's in the Bag. Cindy Cameron (front centre), owner of the local Sobeys store, accepted 545 paper grocery bags from the students at St. Alexander Catholic School last week. Each student in the school decorated a bag with an Earth Day message, which will be shared with the community when the bags are used to pack groceries at Sobeys. FILE
January 31 1996: Four people were sent to the Welland Hospital after a truck and car collided on Highway 20 just west of Haist Street around 8:30 AM last Tuesday. Three of the occupants involved were treated and released and the other held for observation. The truck spilled its bricks, causing the highway to be closed for cleanup. FILE
May 27 1981: Winners of Class 1 of the Fenwick Lions Baby Contest were James Douglas Miller born Dec. 7 1980, son of Joan and Douglas Miller of Niagara Falls, and Sarah Elizabeth, born Jan. 12 1981, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Van Maaron of Foss Road, Fenwick. FILE
March 21 1978: Craig Irvine, second prize winner at the Fonthill Senior Public Science Fair, based his project on the human brain and tried to interpret the difference in the minds between boys and girls at juvenile age. FILE
September 4 1962: John Bromfield will be the featured performer at this year's Welland County Fair, September 11-15 inclusive. Star of the television series "Sheriff of Cochise" and "US Marshall," he will appear in afternoon and evening performances. FILE
