Improvements to the Welland hospital day-surgery operating suites have taken place over the past two weeks with investment in three new washer/disinfectors and an operating room refurbishment, a news release says.

A lot of important work at a hospital takes place behind the scenes and one of the lesser-known but crucial departments is the Medical Device Reprocessing. MDR technicians are responsible for sterilizing supplies, equipment and instruments for all of Niagara Health sites.

The Niagara Health Foundation supported the $473,700 purchase of the three units, with the help of community donations. The new washer/disinfectors are easy to load, operate and maintain, which will improve employee workflows for increased efficiency, the release said.

While work in the area to install the new disinfectors was being completed, a refresh in the operating room also took place. That included stripping old wallpaper, painting, and applying new panels on the walls in the hallway.

Both the Medical Device Reprocessing department and Operating Room at the Welland hospital are now fully functioning.
