On Thursday, April 4, 2024, a transformer located outside of the Meridian Community Centre caught fire, leading to an evacuation of the building and a loss of power. No one was injured during the incident.

A generator has been acquired and is providing power to a portion of the building, including the front desk, gyms, some of the community rooms and staff offices.

Staff continue to work with Hydro One, electrical contractors, and the Electrical Safety Authority of Ontario to find a permanent solution and re-open the remainder of the building in a timely manner.

“We are heartbroken at the cancellation of so many highly attended programs and events that take place in the arenas at the Meridian Community Centre,” said Vickie vanRavenswaay, Director of Recreation, Culture and Wellness. “However, we remain dedicated to welcoming residents to the portions of the facility that do have power, including gyms and several community rooms, and look forward to offering as much programming as is still possible during this difficult time.”

The following programs will continue as scheduled:

  • Spin classes
  • Brock Fit
  • Drop-in Basketball
  • Drop-in Volleyball
  • Pickleball
  • 55+ Aerobics
  • Lift & Sweat
  • Walking/Sitting Meditation
  • Chair Yoga
  • Zumba
  • Hatha Yoga
  • Mom & Tot
  • Family Drop-in Gym

Professional development day camps, including the eclipse camp on Monday, April 8, 2024, will also proceed as scheduled.

At this time, the Meridian Community Centre's elevators are inoperable. Therefore, access to the second floor is limited to those who can use the stairs.

The Accipiter and Duliban Insurance Arenas, as well as the walking track, will remain closed until further notice.

As such, events and services taking place in those facilities have been cancelled indefinitely.

Anyone with questions regarding affected programming, rentals, or access to the Meridian Community Centre should email [email protected] or call 905-732-7872.
