Last month, Niagara Health kicked-off our series of community engagement sessions in Fort Erie and Port Colborne. These are the first of many community events scheduled in the coming months as we continue the planning for a three-site hospital system in Niagara.
We are grateful for the hundreds of community members who came out to participate in the Fort Erie and Port Colborne sessions and those who joined us virtually for our community webinar. Your involvement is critical in shaping the future of hospital care in Niagara and we appreciate your time and commitment.
In order to deliver seamless care to patients and their families across Niagara, we must evolve to overcome the challenges of today’s health care landscape. All of our existing hospitals, aside from our St. Catharines site (The Marotta Family Hospital), are outdated. Our current sites in Port Colborne, Fort Erie and Niagara Falls are beyond the point of renovation to meet our future needs. The changing health care landscape around us demands that we change to better serve patients and their families.
During the engagement sessions, community members had the opportunity to learn more about our future plans, provide input and have their questions answered by President and CEO Lynn Guerriero and members of our executive team.
Some of the questions raised asked about the role of primary care. While Niagara Health is not responsible for the delivery of primary care services, we are working closely with municipalities, the Ontario government, the Niagara Ontario Health Team, Équipe Santé Ontario Niagara and community partners and family doctors to advocate for increased access to primary care and to support addressing those gaps in care.
We want to thank everyone who participated in these community engagement sessions for your thoughtful questions and feedback. Your input is invaluable as we work to move forward with this important project. We will continue to keep our community informed and look forward to continuing our engagement across the Niagara region.
Together, we can build a strong, sustainable hospital system that meets the needs of our community for years to come.
