Periodontist Dr. Peter Fritz, with help Treatment Coordinator Carly Zanatta and other staff, is hosting a health-related lecture series in Fonthill.

With a goal in mind to educate people and clear up misinformation, periodontist Dr. Peter Fritz says he has created a safe space for the community to learn about a variety of dentistry and health-related topics. With help from his team of professionals, Fritz has organized a monthly continuing education lecture series that will examine topics such as oral hygiene in the wilderness, pet dentistry and cyber libel.

“When Covid-19 happened, I think it knocked out a lot of health information on social media that wasn’t necessarily correct,” says Fritz. “There are a lot of strong medical relationships in our community and I wanted to create a learning platform where people could come and professionals could reconnect, and share the right information for the public. I really wanted to provide an opportunity for people to go to get the right information, and not from TikTok.”

The lectures are offered through Big Red Canoe, a Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario-approved study club for all things new in the field of dentistry. Fritz said the series has been extended beyond dentistry, to include topics covered by all allied health professionals.

Topics include Dental Emergencies for Allied Health Professionals on March 21, Restoring the Single Implant on April 25, Oral Hygiene in the Wilderness with Canadian explorer Adam Shoalts on May 15, Pets Have Teeth Too: An Intro to Veterinary Dentistry on June 6, Skin Lesions and Skin Cancer on June 19, Most Interesting Cases in Perio 2024 on Oct. 17, and Cyber Libel on Nov. 27. The two-hour lectures will begin at 6 p.m. at 165 Highway 20, in Fonthill.

Fritz said his dental office underwent a significant expansion during the pandemic, doubling in size to 8,000 square feet. The renovations included an independent five-chair hygiene clinic, a “Discovery and Innovation Hub,” and a dedicated meeting area called the Learning Stream where the lectures will be held. Thanks to the new changes, Fritz said 50 to 60 people can attend the lectures in person.

While the lectures are free, attendees are requested to contribute a $10 donation, which will go toward supporting Feed Niagara.

“Space is limited so we ask that people register in advance and the $10 is to secure their seat,” Fritz explained.
