Spin yourself fit at the MCC

Exercise bike classes available for the next ten weeks

Spinning, a form of low-impact exercise using stationary bicycles equipped with a weighted flywheel, boasts such benefits as weight loss, improved strength and endurance, and stress relief. It’s high-energy cardio, enjoyed to a rhythmic and rocking musical playlist, and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Ten-week classes, priced at $100, have already started this month at the Meridian Community Centre, and run until mid-April. Sessions run daily, and are open to those living in Pelham, and also in neighbouring municipalities.

Brittany Macleod, Pelham’s Active Living Programmer at the MCC, participated in the class on Monday at 4:45 PM. She said that the sessions are capped at 14 participants, and that spots are still available.

“It’s been a while since I took spinning classes, so I expect it will be tough,” said Macleod with trepidation. Her friend Brianna, from Niagara Falls, was along for the (stationary) ride.

“It’s a night out for the girls,” said Brianna with a laugh, who added that she first got into spinning classes at Brock during her student years.

The class instructor, Bobbi, cranked up the volume for the first tune (the 1985 hit by Katrina and the Waves, I’m Walking on Sunshine) and encouraged participants to “pedal to the beat. And if you really want a challenge, I’ve got another class right after this one, so feel free to stick around,” she said.

Local residents Lisa and her husband, Frank, joined the class, having done some spinning several years ago. They cycle during the summer months, and felt a need to get in better shape for the coming season on local roadways.

“We needed to get off the couch,” said Lisa. “We do a few weights at home, but it’s easy to quit when you are exercising on your own. We are more motivated by working as part of a group, sweating it out together. The MCC is a great spot for fitness, and the price of the spin classes is really reasonable.”
