Local youth get a taste of flight on Discover Aviation Day at NCDRA

Last Saturday offered perfect weather for flying, and 100 Niagara youngsters took to the skies with COPA Flight 149 pilots on their annual Discover Aviation Day, held at Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport, on River Road, in south Pelham.

Eight small planes took the neophytes aloft for 20-minute flights, with views of the Welland Canal, Lake Erie, and the surrounding countryside.

Pilots on the ground provided an orientation session which introduced the youth to the principles of flight and basic controls in the cockpit.

The flights were free of charge, with all expenses paid by the participating pilots.

Reilly, an event organizer, said that some 60 teens have already signed up for flights next summer.
