Zombies to take over downtown Thorold

The FunHouse on Front St. is organizing a zombie walk on Friday, Aug. 25; ‘It’s the last [car show] of the summer and you got to go out with a big bang’

Downtown residents might want to lock their doors on Friday, August 25, as zombies will be roaming the streets.

The FunHouse on Front Street is organizing a zombie walk to coincide with the weekly car show.

“It’s going to be a bunch of people dressed up as zombies,” explains shop owner Mike McIntyre, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “We are doing a zombie walk out of the store, up along the street.”

McIntyre came up with the idea for the event after seeing videos of a similar walk in Edmonton that showed a giant group of zombies roaming the streets.

“I figured I want to bring something like that to the downtown,” he says. “It’s the last [car show] of the summer and you got to go out with a big bang. I figure a different style outside-of-the-box [approach] may bring more people to it.”

The event is completely free but any money or food donations for Community Care Thorold are welcomed.

“We’re doing some prizes and some giveaways,” McIntyre says. “We’re doing a ‘Best Zombie’ prize and we’re setting up a booth for professional photographs for whomever wants a picture.”

McIntyre has been infected with a love for zombies since he “was a little kid.”

“I’m a horror guy,” he says. “I love horror movies, it’s a big part of me. I don’t scare very easy but I love the scary movies. ”

His favourite zombie movie is 'Shaun of the Dead.'

“It’s one of those movies that starts out funny and humorous but it becomes scary near the end,” he says.

Transforming into a zombie can be a very creative endeavour.

“You walk like you’re hurt or something — each person has their own walk,”  McIntyre says. “You want to have lighter skin, so maybe white make-up, maybe darker around the eyes and some torn up clothes.”

The event is open to all ages and McIntyre hopes to see as many Thorold residents as possible participate.

“You could have a newborn zombie or you could have a senior zombie,” he laughs. “Either way, it doesn’t matter as long as everybody is participating in the event and enjoying downtown Thorold. That’s all that it’s meant for.”

The downtown zombie walk will take place on Friday, August 25 at 5:00 p.m. and will start from The FunHouse at 26-B Front St.
