Jackfish needs extra innings to clip Maple Leafs

The Welland Jackfish needed extra innings to dispose of the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-4 Sunday during Intercounty Baseball League action at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.

The Jackfish loaded the bases in the 10th inning and got RBI singles from Gianfranco Morello and James Smibert, as well as a sacrifice fly from Carlos Martinez to secure the win. Morello and Steven Moretto led the offence with home runs.

Justin Marra led the Maple Leafs with three hits, including a home run and two RBI.

Deivy Mendez got the win on the mound. Starter James Bradwell struck out seven in his five innings of work. Julian Valdez took the loss. Starter Wilgenis Alvarado had five strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Jackfish improve to 20-6 and host the Kitchener Panthers Thursday at 7:25 p.m. The Maple Leafs are now 13-13 and visit the Guelph Royals Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Strong finish vaults Cardinals over Baycats

The Hamilton Cardinals scored three times in the seventh inning and five times in the eighth to earn an 8-1 win over the Barrie Baycats Sunday at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium during Intercounty Baseball League action.

Tanner Rempel singled, Brandon Nicholson doubled and Tyler Duncan tripled to score five runs in the eighth inning.

Dennis Dei Baning hit a solo home run, while Nicholson and Duncan drove in one run each during the three-run seventh.

Ryan Rijo hit a solo homer in the ninth inning to score the Baycats’ lone run.

Colby Ring got the win on the mound, throwing seven solid innings, giving up only one hit. Evan Soules took the loss, throwing six strikeouts over six innings.

The Cardinals improve to 14-11 and visit the Baycats (16-8) on Thursday at 7:25 p.m.

Panthers pounce on Sox

The Kitchener Panthers rode a two-run fifth inning to defeat the Brantford Red Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Brantford Red Sox Sunday at Jack Couch Park during Intercounty Baseball League action.

After the Red Sox scored four in the fifth inning, the Panthers responded with two of their own thanks to a Nick Parsons single. Raul Gonzalez had a hot bat with three hits, including a home run and a pair of RBI.

The Red Sox big inning came thanks to RBI singles from Kieran Bowles and Christian Kuzemka.

Brett Reid earned the win on the mound, while Brian Williams was credited with the loss.

The Panthers improve to 16-10 and host the Barrie Baycats Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Red Sox are now 4-22 and visit the Guelph Royals Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
