Jackfish snag a win over Maple Leafs

The Welland Jackfish bats will be ready for its Sunday road tilt, while the Toronto Maple Leafs will be wanting to get some momentum going.

At Welland Stadium Saturday, the Jackfish scored 16 times on 19 hits in a 16-8 win over the Maple Leafs.

The big innings for the Jackfish came in the third when they scored five, and added six in the sixth. James Smibert led the offence with four RBI, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Sam Cawker had a solo homer, while Ryan Potrecz had a triple, with Hogan Brown and Tyler Dupuis hit doubles.

The Maple Leafs mounted a comeback in the eighth inning, scoring five and added two more in the ninth. Ryan Burnside led the Maple Leafs with a single, double, and three RBI.

The Jackfish are in Hamilton at 2:05 p.m., while the Maple Leafs host the Guelph Royals at 2 p.m.

Royals strike early and often to beat Majors

The Guelph Royals have a ton of momentum heading into Sunday’s road matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs. That game at Dominico Field at Christie Pits is at 2 p.m.

The Royals struck three times in the first inning and six times in the fourth en route to a 9-6 victory over the London Majors at David E. Hastings Stadium.

Ethan Hammond had a solo home run, while J.D. Williams singled to score a run to lead the first-inning barrage.

After Tommy Reyes-Cruz and Byron Reichstein hit back-to-back solo homers to get the Majors within a run in the third inning, the Royals responded in a big way.

Darius Barlas and Williams singled to score one, while Tony Hrynkiw doubled to score a pair to lead the way.

The Majors attempted to come back in the eighth, scoring four, but it was too little too late.

Sandy Baez got the win on the mound and threw a great game, going five innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out five.

Cardinal bats hot

The Hamilton Cardinals go into its home tilt today with its bats clicking thanks to a 13-5 win over the Brantford Red Sox.

After scoring one run in the second and third innings, the Cardinals struck five time in the fourth thanks to its five hits, and added three more in the fifth, tacking on one in the sixth and two more in the eighth.

Luis Bernardo led the way with three RBI and a double, Dennis Dei Baning had three hits, including a double, a stolen base and two RBI.

Matthew Fabian led the offence with four hits and an RBI.

Logan Walters got the win on the mound, striking out three and giving up no runs on five its in five innings of work.

The Cardinals host the Welland Jackfish at 2:05 p.m. while the Red Sox host the Kitchener Panthers Friday at 8 p.m.

Baycats get by Panthers

The Barrie Baycats used a three-run fourth inning to get by the Kitchener Panthers 7-5 Saturday at Vintage Throne Stadium in the first half of a back-to-back home-and-home set this weekend.

After the Panthers scored twice in the top half of the first inning, Starlin Rodriguez hit a two-run home run to tie things up. Then in the fourth inning, the Baycats scored three times to take a lead they wouldn’t give up. Josh Cote also had a home run.

Liam Wilson led the Panthers offence with a solo homer, and single.

Juan Benitez earned the win for the Baycats, giving up one run on eight hits in six innings of work. Jose Vasquez was credited with the loss. He threw six innings and struck out seven.

The same teams play today in Kitchener at 2 p.m. in the back half of the home-and-home set.
