Officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service conducted RIDE spot checks on New Year's Eve in the Town of West Lincoln, the Town of Lincoln, and St. Catharines.

Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 500 vehicles and asked if any drivers had consumed alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening, police said in a news release.

In total, eight drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis, police said.

Each driver provided a sample that resulted in an acceptable range and was free to drive away, according to police.

"The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like RIDE," police said.

Impaired driving remains the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada, police added.

The New Year's RIDE initiative was made possible, in part, through grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere program.
