Niagara police say a driver faces impaired charges after a vehicle with a flat tire and its exhaust dragging along the road crashed into a police cruiser.
Police say on Wednesday at around 9 p.m. they received a call about an impaired driver in the area of Dominion Road and Gorham Road in Fort Erie.
Witnesses reported that a male had exited an area business, stumbled into a vehicle, and drove away.
"The vehicle was observed to have a flat tire and its exhaust was dragging on the roadway," police said in a news release.
Police responded and spotted the vehicle near Bernard Avenue and Dominion Road.
Police said out of a concern for public safety, cruisers moved behind and in front of the vehicle with emergency lights and sirens activated.
"The suspect vehicle continued driving forward until the vehicle collided with a police cruiser and veered off the roadway and into a ditch," police said.
No injuries were sustained as a result of the collision, police said.
Duncan Simpson, 53, of Fort Erie is charged with:
- Impaired Operation of a Conveyance
- Impaired Operation of a Conveyance – Exceed BAC
Simpson was also charged with six additional provincial offences. His driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days.
He was released with a future court date.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and Simpson is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
