Fatality on QEW as tire crashes through bus windshield

Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Highway Safety Division (HSD) - Burlington Detachment, Niagara office are investigating a three-vehicle collision that resulted in one fatality.

On Friday May 24, 2024, at 3:41 p.m., the OPP were called to a collision on the QEW Toronto bound, on the descending side of the Garden City Skyway bridge in St. Catharines, Ontario. 

A passenger van travelling on the QEW Toronto bound lost a wheel, which struck a pick up truck in the Niagara bound lanes. The wheel then struck the windshield of a Toronto bound coach bus. As a result of the wheel going through the windshield of the bus a 48-year-old, male from Toronto was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three passengers on the bus received serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

The OPP-HSD Traffic Support Unit is assisting with the ongoing investigation. The QEW Toronto bound at Glendale was closed in the area of the collision for the investigation.
