Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 8 District – Grimsby detectives have arrested a man in relation to a robbery.
The investigation by NRPS officers began on Feb. 8 at 12:55 pm when they responded to a report that a female victim's purse had been stolen from her arm as she walked in a parking lot. Officers attended a grocery store located near South Service Road and Casablanca Boulevard in Grimsby. The unknown suspect left the scene in a Mazda sedan. The suspect is then believed to have used the stolen credit cards from the victim's purse to purchase lottery tickets and gift cards at various businesses throughout Grimsby. The victim, who is in her 80s, was not injured.
Eighth District detectives were assigned to the investigation. Detectives working with uniform officers were able to identify a suspect. On Feb. 14, investigators located and arrested Matthew Cameron Norton, 37, of Grimsby.
Norton is charged with the following criminal offences:
- Robbery contrary to section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
- Unauthorized use of a credit card contrary to section 342(1)(i) of the Criminal Code (2 Counts)
- Fail to comply with undertaking contrary to section 145(4) of the Criminal Code
Norton was held in custody and will appear at a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on Feb. 15.
