Niagara Regional Police say they stopped nearly 1,700 vehicles on Canada Day in impaired driving spot checks in St. Catharines.

Police said throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 1,697 vehicles and inquired if drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening.

In total, 28 drivers provided a sample of their breath for analysis, police said in a news release.

Two drivers provided samples that resulted in an “alert” which then resulted in a three-day licence suspension, according to police.

Several provincial offence notices were also issued related to traffic offences throughout the evening, police said.

The initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program.
