Niagara woman, 81, dies after collision with cyclist

An elderly Niagara-on-the-Lake resident has died after being struck by a cyclist Saturday afternoon.

Niagara Regional Police said they responded to the collision on April 1 at around 1:45 p.m. between a cyclist and a pedestrian on Queenston Street near Dee Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Also responding were Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services and Niagara Emergency Medical Service paramedics.

Upon arrival, it was determined an 81-year-old Niagara-on-the-Lake resident who was walking on Queenston Street began to cross the roadway from the east side. 

She was struck by a 64-year-old cyclist who travelling south on Queenston Street. 

Despite lifesaving measures, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased after being transported to a local hospital by paramedics.

The NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation with support from the NRPS Forensic Services Unit. 

The circumstances related to the cause of the collision remain under investigation, police said in a news release.

Police encouraged witnesses to the collision and motorists who were in the area with an operational dash-camera to review their footage and contact the lead detective at 905-688-4111, option 3, badge 1009206 with any relevant information.
