On Dec. 28, 2023, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) conducted RIDE spot checks in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and the City of Welland.

Throughout the night, officers stopped over 600 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening. In total, 23 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis and another driver was required to perform standardized field sobriety tests.

One driver was arrested and charged for impaired – exceed blood alcohol concentration, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada after providing samples of their breath that exceeded 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. Another driver had their licence suspended for three days after providing a roadside breath sample that resulted in an “alert” range, meaning their blood alcohol concentration was between 50 milligrams of alcohol and 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood.

In addition, one Provincial Offence Notice (ticket) and five Provincial Offence warnings were issued to drivers for various offences under the Highway Traffic Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, and the Cannabis Act.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like RIDE.

Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program.
