LETTER: Crossley rowers should fundraise themselves

With MCC, Town has already favoured a 'select few'

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor regarding the ongoing debate over whether Pelham taxpayers should contribute cash to Crossley's rowing program:

Having read about the rowers' request, I hearken back to the many taxpayers, and many seniors, who requested an indoor pool be included when the MCC was being designed. The MCC has massive hockey rinks, small exercise areas, limited equipment and limited parking. It clearly was a choice of a select few, so not really democratic as residents' voices were ignored. Hockey is an expensive sport and seasonal. It costs plenty to keep rinks icy and smooth.

When the YMCA requested funding, Pelham Town Council turned them down, attempting to justify that decision by saying Pelham offered everything the YMCA did. This is simply not true. Every week I meet a Pelham taxpayer either in a yoga class, on a bike or queued up for pickleball.

As for rowers, there are rowing machines at the YMCA too. Fundraising looks good on a resume. Best get started as spring is upon us. Soon the ice will melt for good under the warm Niagara sun.
