LETTER: Jolly Old St. Nick, listen up

PelhamToday received this open letter to Santa from a 91-year-old reader:

Dear Santa,

My Christmas is secure. There is nothing that I need. Since I have been writing to you every Christmas since I was a little girl, you must know me pretty well. You know my favourite colour, what I like to eat, the many toys you have brought me. I still have some, I am sure, tucked away in a box in my basement, too cherished to give away, and horrors, I would never throw them out.

When I grew older and married and had my three kids, I asked for different things from you — mainly for my house or our ski home, but rarely for myself.

And now, I am old.

So, what can I ask for? There is nothing left for you to bring. I absolutely want no flowers, no wine, no hand cream, no old lady clothes. Please dear Santa— no clutter or you’ll hear me mutter. And Santa, if you really are the jolly old soul I always loved, if you can make wishes come true, please look around this planet—you will know what to bring as we celebrate life.

Life, a most beautiful word.

The greatest gift of all.
