Mom was born in the small town of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. She came to Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1955 where she made a home for her family. She worked at various jobs settling in at Chef Boyardee in Niagara Falls. She worked there for many years and enjoyed life long friendships.

Always helping people she volunteered her time in Palliative care at the Welland Hospital receiving the Volunteer of the year award from Her Honour Lieutenant Governor Hilary Weston in 2000. As a Girl Guide leader she excelled at teaching the new girls the ropes.

Never being one to quit, while she was working full time, she finished high-school and then went on to University to complete her Masters degree in Social Work.
